BIO

I always liked to invent my own stories to tell rather than to narrate the ones that others have created. My recent music is about a never-ending memory, where the ephemeral existence of each sound is replicated in a dimension of residual, augmented projections. Layer by layer, a new world is built. Here, nothing is temporary. In the world of the captive shadows, everything lasts forever. Diana Gheorghiu

Commissioned by British Council, Ernst von Siemens Foundation, ICR (The Romanian Cultural Institute), The International George Enescu Festival, UCIMR  (the Romanian Musicians Association of Performers Creation) and CNDB (the National Centre of Dance) Bucharest, Diana Gheorghiu is an active composer and also a respected and dedicated project manager from Bucharest.

She studied with Irinel Anghel (prior  to her University admission) and Octavian Nemescu, at the National University of Music in Bucharest, where she has a PhD in music, with the dissertation Genuine versus original in Romanian music, starting from the second half of the 20th century. During her university years, she won several national prizes and international scholarships for new music workshops with Dimitri Terzakis (Festival Junger Kunstler Bayreuth) and Aurel Stroe (Busteni).

Since 2002, she collaborates with renowned composers (Octavian Nemescu, Dan Dediu, Doina Rotaru, Erik Peters, Marian Borkowski, Philip Cashian, Kenneth Hesketh, Param Vir, Joe Cutler, Joshua Fineberg) and performers (Exaudi Vocal Ensemble, RTE ConTempo Quartet, Profil Ensemble conducted by Tiberiu Soare, ICon Arts Ensemble conducted by Gabriel Bebeselea) and, since 2013, she coordinates the first international creative residency in Romania, the ICon Arts Composer in Residence Program in Sibiu.

She is the first Romanian composer using the AR (Augmented Reality) technology in a classical contemporary work, the Dragonfly cycle, premiered during the ICon Arts Festival in Sibiu (Thalia Philharmonic Hall, August 2012).

Her recent interest in composition is exploring a personal, original aesthetic, the never ending memory and her composer’s signature is the captive shadows technique.

Diana Gheorghiu is a member of UCMR (the Romanian Composers and Musicologists Union) and ARFA (the Romanian Association of Women in Art). Since 2002, she also holds a Masters Degree in PR and Communication at SNSPA (the National School of Political Science and Public Administration) in Bucharest and her name is linked to Exces Music and the ICon Arts Academy and Festival in Sibiu (Transylvania),  one of the most important Romanian international events in contemporary arts.
